i was pleased to see that judith warner wrote a blog about hillary clinton, tears and politics. hers is, of course, more completely thought than my few sentences; however, we looked at the same phenomenon through different lenses (i know, it’s a cliche in academic lingo–looking through different lenses–but an apt one.) she was critical of the demeaning attention given to the intellectual clinton, attention to her as “one of the girls.” my slight observation was meant as a prod to the public to distinguish between thought and emotion when listening to candidates (or the media.) warner writes that emotion is necessary in an election where the candidates share so many positions; i argue that the public is not aware of the lack of diversity within the candidates, and that they might become aware and demand other ideas or proposals if they weren’t distracted by the emotional content of speeches.
